Airports in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is one of the biggest states of India in respect of its commercial opportunities. It has been recognised as a leading producer of manufactured goods, agricultural items and a large base of historical, mythological and religious places encouraging a very good tourist footfall. It has some excellent airports to provide air services in UP.

Choudhary Charan Singh International Airport Lucknow

Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport at Lucknow

This main airport of UP is rightly situated in the state capital Lucknow. It is popularly known as Amausi airport. It is one of the busiest airports in India. It caters to national flights from Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Dehradun and Bengaluru and international flights from Dubai, Muscat, Jeddah, Sharjah and Riyadh. It is all set to receive flights from Abu Dhabi now. Lucknow Airport has plenty of flights to Delhi and Mumbai and it can easily cater to the interests of the fliers from UP to foreign destinations without much trouble. The airport is open to charter services which are provided by a company in civil aviation charter business.

Amausi Airport became operational in 1986. It began as a small airport with only 1 terminal at that time since it catered mostly to high governmental functionaries and high corporate fliers. The airport was christened Choudhary Charan Singh Airport in 2008. It was upgraded and received international status in 2012 with the commissioning of a new and swanky terminal. Now it has 2 terminals. The old Terminal 1 is used for international flights. It provides special facilities to Haj pilgrims. This terminal has 2 departure and 3 arrival gates with 2 immigration and customs counters. The new terminal no. 2 serves domestic flights. The contact address of Amausi Airport is given below.

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport Varanasi

This is the 2nd big airport of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated at a distance of about 18 km from the main town at Babatpur. The airport is an important destination for thousands of pilgrims who come to Varanasi to visit several Hindu places of import. It is also the closest direct route for the pilgrims visiting important Buddhist places of the area. It is a civil airport looked after by the Airport Authority of India. It started as a domestic airport and was officially named Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in 2005. It was upgraded and awarded international status in 2012.

The Varanasi airport is fully equipped to handle domestic as well as international flights. It has 3 terminals called international terminal, cargo and domestic terminal. There are special facilities for senior citizens like free baggage handling. The airport at Allahabad is also called Bamrauli Airport. It is situated approximately 12 km from the city. The airport is managed in its civil sector by the AAI through its civil aviation training wing at Bamrauli. It operates only domestic flights. A curious fact about Allahabad Airport is its link with the British Raj. It was built in 1919 as an international airport. There were direct international flights to London till 1932. It was only in 1946 that the international flights stopped running from here. It now serves as a connecting link for the people of Allahabad to Delhi and Mumbai. There are plans to upgrade the lending systems and other facilities here by the AAI. It already has the VOR and DME equipments installed by 2011 as per the up gradation plans. The Airport at Kanpur is known as Chakeri Airport also. It is being run as part of the Air Force Base at Chakeri in its Civil Terminal. It has a history of changing operations and stop-starting many times in the past. There were regular flights from Kanpur to the major towns of India till 1970. It had flights connecting Kanpur to Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata Chennai and Pune.

The rise of Amausi Airport in Lucknow, merely 78 km from Kanpur caused the decline of this airport. It was easy for the fliers of Kanpur to board a flight from Lucknow to domestic and international destinations.

The Kanpur Airport was revived with regular flights when its civil terminal was once again opened in 2004. Efforts are being made by the AAI to expand the civil terminal and turn Kanpur into a bigger service provider. The Airport Authority of India is in the process of acquiring land from the state government for expanding the facilities by constructing bigger apron, increased runway lengths and a new civil enclave. Agra Airport

It is a matter of great concern for the government of the state and the AAI that Agra does not have a modern independent international airport till date. It is really surprising that the city of Taj still depends on the Air Force Station Kheria for domestic flights for civil and commercial purposes. The Airport in Agra is a military airbase under the control of the Air Force in Agra.

The state and the central authorities have realized the importance of having an international Airport. It is imperative to have a modern facility at Agra to boost the tourism further because Agra has tremendous potential to be still exploited in tourism sector. It has been decided that soon the city will have a new Green field International Airport. The Taj International Airport Project is going full swing with the help of the state government. The present airport at Kheria has limited civilian facilities. The flights to this airport are provided by the state carrier Air India connecting Agra to Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Khajuraho. Its address is given below.

Faizabad Airport

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has opened the facility to private domestic airlines to land and park their planes for a nominal fee at the flying school in Faizabad. This has been done to encourage commercial use of the facility and serve the interests of the passengers of the twin cities of Faizabad and Ayodhya. The AAI has signed a MoU with the state to develop the airport as a full-fledged facility along with the three other airports of Meerut, Saifai and Moradabad. Land has also been provided free of cost to the AAI for the construction of a civil terminal.

Bareilly Airport

A quarter for restricted use of civil passengers has been provided at the Trishul Air Force Base in Bareilly. The facility is situated at Izzatnagar at a distance of about 6 km from the city. The Civil Enclave is not an open terminal but only government officials on duty can make use of the base facility.

The AAI is now in the process of constructing a civil terminal for passengers at Ahemdnagar Village. A parcel of 10 hectares of land has been acquired for the purpose. The civil administration has also received the first tranche of INR 11 crore for the construction work to begin in full swing.
