Allahabad holds prime importance in Hindu scriptures due to its mention in the Hindu holy books viz.  Purans Ramayana and Mahabharata, the meeting of three holy rivers, Ganga Yamuna and Saraswati is considered very sacred according to Hindu mythology. Apart from such importance the city has a very interesting past as Aryans also settled here and place was known as ’Aryavarta‘ or ‘Madhyadesh’ then.

Allahabad is a holy city in Hindu religion and is widely visited by pilgrims from across the globe. It is also known as “Prayag” and “Triveni” where three sacred rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river of Saraswati meet. Meeting point is known as Sangam. The bathing at Prayag is mentioned in Brahma Puran - “In the month of Magha at the bank of Ganga Yamuna in Prayag bestows results of millions and millions of Ashwamedha Yajna”. Beside city has given nine prime ministers to the country and so is also known as capital of prime ministers.

Geography of Allahabad

Allahabad is located at 25.45°N 81.84°E in the southern part of the Uttar Pradesh. The district is bounded by Pratapgarh district on the North, Varnasi on the East, Mirzapur on the South and Fatehpur and Banda on the West. Allahabad features the typical version of a humid subtropical climate that is common to cities in north-central India. Allahabad, as other parts of Uttar Pradesh, experiences three seasons: hot summer, cool dry winter and warm humid monsoon. The summer season starts from April and lasts till June with the maximum temperatures ranging from 40 °C to 45 °C. Winter season begins in late November and lasts till February. Monsoon begins in early July and lasts till September.

History of Allahabad

Allahbad was earlier known by the name of “prayag”. Prayag is first seen mentioned in Hindu scriptures and holy books like Vedas, Ramayana and Mahabharata. During the presence of Aryans the city was named “Aryavrata”. Allahabad also became the part of Mauryan and Gupta Empire of the east and Kushan empire of the west before it became the part of Kannauj empire in 15th century. The city also witnessed the incursion before the colonial rule was imposed on india. It became the part of Delhi Sultanate in A.D 1193, later on Mughals took over. Under Mughals, Prayag became an important place. Akbar built a magnificient fort (viz. Allahabad fort) on the banks of the holy Sangam and renamed the town as illahbad in1575.

In 1765 British defeated the combined forces of Nawab of Awadh and Mughal empror Shah Allam second, in the battle of buxar. in 1801, the Nawab of Awadh ceded the city to the British throne. During 1857 mutiny Allahabad had a presence of European troops. Maulana liyaqat ali freedom fighter of 1857, unfurled the banner of revolt. After mutiny was suppressed the British realized the importance of location of the place and established the High court the Police headquarter and Public service commission in the city, this transformed Allahabad into administrative centre.

Infrastructure

Allahabad is an important administrative district of Uttar Pradesh with its headquarters located at Allahabad city.  The district is divided into eight Tehsils named as Sadar, Karchhana, Phulpur, Bara, Koraon, Soraon, Handia and meja. Tehsils are divided into Development Blocks. There are twenty development blocks all together.

By Air: Allahabad has a domestic airport linked with Delhi.

By Rail: The city has direct rail links with important cities viz. Delhi, Calcutta, Patna, Guwahati, Chennai, Gwalior, Mumbai, Meerut, Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi. Almost all express and super-fast trains passing through Allahabad take a halt at Allahabad station.

By Road: The road transportation is very convenient. Allahabad is located on National Highways 2 and 27. One can reach Allahabad from any part of the state by bus.
