Bagpat District

Baghpat is located at the banks of River Yamuna. It got established as a different district in the year 1997. Before that Baghpat was a part of Meerut district in western Uttar Pradesh. It is an administrative district of Uttar Pradesh with the HQ at Baghpat city. Baghpat district is famous for the production of sugarcane, wheat, mustard and vegetables, among others.

Geography of Bagpat


The Baghpat city is located on the banks of river Yamuna at 28° 57' North Latitude and 77 °13' East Longitude. Baghpat is 52 KM from Meerut City and is on the main Delhi-Saharanpur Highway around 40 KM from Delhi toward north. District Bagpat is one of the districts of Uttar Pradesh. In the north of the district Baghpat there is district Muzzafarnagar in the south district Ghaziabad, Yamuna in the west and district Sonipat of Haryana. Weather of the district remains hot and dry during summer and extreme cold during winters.

History of Bagpat


Baghpat was originally known as ‘Vyagprastha’ - Land of Tigers (because of large population of tigers in the area many centuries ago). Later on the name of the district was changed to Baghpat. The largest town in the district is Baraut. It was founded by the Pandavas mentioned in the Hindu Epic Mahabharata as Vyagprastha. Barnaya near  Binauli is the site of the Lakshagraha (palace made up of wax) which was built by Purochana a minister of Duryodhana to kill the Pandavas.

This city was originally known as Vyagprastha. There are many versions of the story as to how the city derived its name. According to one version the city’s original name was ‘Vyagprasth’, while another version says, the city has derived its name from the Hindi word ‘Vakyaprasth’, the meaning of which is, place of delivering speeches. Inspired by such words and versions, the city was finally named ‘Baghpat’ or ‘Bagpat’ during the Mughal Era.

Infrastructure of Bagpat


Agriculture is the main occupation of the district. Approximately 70% of population rely on agriculture. Main crops of Baghpat are wheat, sugarcane and rice.

Tourist Places in Bagpat


Pura Mahadev: According to the local belief this temple was established by Rishi Parshuram. A fair is held here every Shravan and Falgun.

Valmiki Ashram: According to the local belief this Ashram was of Rishi Valmiki. During the days of vanvass Godess Sita, wife of Lord Rama, lived here and also gave birth to her two sons, Luv and Kush. Many bricks with religious signs had been discovered from this site. Every year a festival is organized in Ashram premises to celebrate the birth of Luv and Kush, the festival and celebrations lasts for a week.

Entrance of Lakshagrah: It was the palace of Lac that was built to kill the Pandavas by conspiracy. The area of this place is spread across  1659 hectares.

Jain Temple: This is believed to be the centuries old temple. It is situated in Badagaon. Grand functions are organized every year.

Gufa wale baba ka mandir: This is a holy place on the name of Gufa Wale Baba ji. There is also lord Shiva's Mandir within this place. Large number of devotees visit it on religious festivals like Holi, Diwali and so on. On Sundays devotees from nearby areas participate in religious activities.

Naag baba ka mandir: It is situated near village Banauli on road from Baraut to Budhana via Puchar. On Naag Panchmi, huge crowd can be seen here. On Deepawali and Holi, people belonging to nearby places come here from other cities of India to worship Naag Devta.

By Air : The nearest airport to Baghpat is Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi (80 km).

By Rail : Nearest Railway Station is Baghpat Road.

By Road : Baghpat is on the main Delhi – Sharanpur Highway, about 52 km from Meerut city and 40 km from New Delhi. Nearest Bus Stand is at Baghpat - Meerut Road.
