Gorakhpur District

Gorakhpur is an important administrative district of Uttar Pradesh with its headquarters located at Gorakhpur city. The district is bounded by districts Mahrajganj in the north, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh and Mau in the south, Kushinagar and Deoria in the east and Sant Kabirnagar in the west.

Gorakhpur derives its name and fame from renowned, ascetic 'Gorakshnath', who was an eminent profounder saint of 'Nath Sampradaya'. A famous shrine 'Gorakhnath' was built in his honour on the same spot where he practiced austerities.

How to Reach


By Air : Air Force Station is 8 km from the railway station. Recently on 8th March, 2003 it has been inaugurated as a commercial airport. Daily flights are available from Gorakhpur to Delhi and Calcutta via Lucknow.

By Rail : Gorakhpur is well connected by rail with all major cities of India. It is an important station in Eastern U.P and also the headquarters of North-Eastern Railway.

By Road : There is a well maintained network of roads connecting major parts of the state. Frequent buses are available from Gorakhpur to Sanauli, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Delhi etc.
