Bird Sanctuaries in Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh has a rich collection of bird sanctuaries. These sanctuaries are a home to a large variety of exotic birds. These sanctuaries provide protection to a large number of migrant birds from various parts of the world and are located in various parts of the state.
Bakhira Bird Sanctuary
Located in Santkabir Nagar district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, this sanctuary offers many picturesque scenes to the spectator. Situated 44 kilometers west from Gorakpur city, this sanctuary was founded in 1980.
A splendid site, this lake is a house to many local birds and migratory waterfowls. It is between November and January that the migrant birds from China, Tibet, Siberia and Europe come here.
Sandi Bird Sanctuary
It is located in Hardoi district of UP. Founded in 1990, it is spread across an area of 309 hectares. It was established in order to protect the natural habitats and aquatic flora of the local and migratory birds.
Lake Bahosi Sanctuary
Located in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh, this bird sanctuary spreads over two lakes near the village of Lakh and Bahosi.
It is one of India’s largest bird sanctuaries. Hosting species of 49 genera, this sanctuary is a home to various migratory birds. Blue bulls, jackals, mongoose, monkeys and fishing cat may also be seen here. The best time to visit this place is December to February.
Nawabganj Sanctuary

Situated in Unnao district, Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is one of the many wetlands of Northern India. Sheltering over two hundred and fifty species of migratory birds (mostly from CIS countries), other attractions of this place include a splendid lake and a deer park. Apart from this a guest house can also be provided for accommodation.
Okhla Bird Sanctuary
Okhla Bird Sanctuary is located at Okhla barrage over Yamuna River. This sanctuary is home for over 300 species of birds, especially water birds. Bird species such as grasslands, wetland and thorny scrub are seen in the sanctuary. It spans across an area of 4 square kilometres.
Patna Bird Sanctuary
This sanctuary is located in Etah district. Spanning over one hundred hectares, it was founded in 1991. Around 200,000 birds of 300 different species reside here. Herons, Pied Mynas, ducks and cormorants can be seen here. Best time to visit this sanctuary is during winters.
Saman Sanctuary
Saman Sanctuary is located in Mainpuri district, in Western
Uttar Pradesh. Established in 1990 the sanctuary is spread over an area of 5 kilometres square. This place is a home for various birds and is very well known for its exotic ‘Bird Safaries’.
Apart from this there are various animals such as mongoose, hare and jackal in this sanctuary. The best time to visit this place is between November and February.
Samaspur Bird Sanctuary
It is situated in the district of Raebareli. Established in 1987, it is diffused over and about 780 hectares. It is a home of over of over 250 varieties of birds, which includes local birds such as spoon bill, spot bill, vultures, comb duck and kingfishers and migratory birds such as surkhab, pin tail, common teel and showler.
Apart from this the lake here has more than twelve kinds of fish. The best period to visit this sanctuary is from November to March.
